I think that you should be able to choose not to show your country in your user profile.
I also thought it would be cool if there was a board about actual video games. there's accessible games, but not actual video games like Nintendo and X-Box and that sort of thing.

Post 2 by the oracle (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Friday, 13-Jan-2017 4:29:03

the trouble with a video game board is, how many people here are actually going to use it?

correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure the majority of the people here don't play video games so their may not be much of a demand

personally, I love the idea- because it means I can talk about my love for final fantasy (lol!), but maybe what would be nice is a general game topic.. I mean we have accessible games, we have the online games, but nowhere we can talk about other games- video games, card games, etc

not really accessible games, but still games in their own right

as for not showing your country, I can sort of see why some people might choose to do that. still, the majority in their profile put in the location something that gives a clue.. they might say texas, or paris, so the country is obvious anyway

but for people who put in their profile location the zone, for exampl, hmm it might work

Guys, you can make a post about final fantasy in the accessible games board.
Its not gonna blow up your computer, I promise.

Post 4 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 13-Jan-2017 15:52:51

Nope. Computer will be fine.
Laughing.
Tell all how to make it accessible and you're gold.

Post 5 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Friday, 13-Jan-2017 19:17:00

no, but a drama would blow up about how it's not right, and about
how the people saying it's not right are not right, et cetera et cetera :p

Post 6 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 13-Jan-2017 19:57:06

I doubt it. There have been discussions about mainstream games here before. Not a lot comes of it really. Usually just two or three people having a conversation.:)

i'm with post 5

don't think I have any more to ad

To be honest, there are a lot of other boards that are barely being used at all, but they offer opportunities for people to post about the things that they're interested in. Adding a video games board, for people who specifically want to talk about video games doesn't sound like too horrible an idea in my opinion. Heck, even I'd probably open up a topic in that kind of board since I love mainstream video games.

Post 9 by the oracle (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 14-Jan-2017 10:48:03

right!.

I think that was the point me and hell tabby were trying to make.

it's no point posting about final fantasy in accessible games, as the game isn't accessible.

so, for people who do have site (I know apart from me, at least 2), it will be good to actually have that board

Post 10 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 14-Jan-2017 13:15:20

Ah, but this is a site ggeared to the blind.
Saying this, 95% of users wish to know about accessibility, or accessible games.
If you want to talk games that are not, you've got a host of places to talk about them.
If you know how to make a mainstream game accessible, now you've got something.
If the game isn't accessible, why would a blind person want to discuss it?
Just sayin.

Post 11 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Saturday, 14-Jan-2017 17:28:48

I'm completely blind and I still play games like Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, Skies of Arcadia, Skyrim, that sort of thing. Not that they're "accessible", but I manage it.

Post 12 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Saturday, 14-Jan-2017 17:57:13

forereel, that is an extremely limited view as far as things go. Many blind people, in spite of the inaccessibility of mainstream games, have purchased various game systems, both old and new, and have managed, in conjunction with apps like KNFB reader, or minor sighted assistance to play these games. Perhaps they don't play them as good as sighted folks, but they do play them. As a result, they'd like to talk about these games with people who have played and are in a similar situation. I.E, blind videogame players, talking to other blind videogame players about videogames. Not to make them more accessible, that's pretty much impossible. Unless all the blind people who play video games got together and exchanged contact information, there are not too many websites if any to my knowledge which would tailor to these desires. Therefore, requesting a board on a site like the zone for something such as this should not be unreasonable. People who have a short-sighted point of view regarding video games just because "we're blind" don't have to look at those boards. There are a lot of boards that I ignore, myself. I don't even bother to read any of the posts on writer's block, for instance. I think I configured my profile not to even show them to me anymore.

Post 13 by the oracle (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 15-Jan-2017 4:06:06

how close minded and selfish.

I don't think i've seen anything like it in my life

Post 14 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 15-Jan-2017 12:52:20

Ah, but maddog that is exactly what I mean.
You see what ever you use to play these games, that is making them accessible.
If you are on a sight full of blind folks and you want to discuss things that are visual, like video games, the first thing they want to know is how to play them.
So, no, my view isn't selfish, or limited.
If I want to open a board talking about golf, well, I'd think the first question will be, how the hell do you play golf?
Laughing.
Oracle, I'm sorry, but blind folks need to be able to use the stuff you want to talk about.
You're not going to get a discussion on something they can't discuss because.
1. They have no concept of what you're talking about.
2. If they can't play, how can they get excited about it?
Now, I've seen you complain about us talking about things related to the blind have I not?
Did I call you selfish?
Why didn't you contribute to these board discussions?
The reason was they didn't interest you, and you have no concetpt of what the hell we're talking about.
Nothing wrong with that in my narrow mind.
Laughing.
You want to discuss video games, fine, but I need to know first how to do it.
If I can do it, now we're gonna have a conversation about how I was playing super Mario on my iPhone and I was kicking assw and taking names with the KNFB reader and well.

Post 15 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 15-Jan-2017 14:58:59

I don't just want to waste my time talking about how to play them though. I want to talk to like-minded blind people, who have already figured out how to play them. I want to hear about the games that they liked, and the games they didn't like. I want to know what their favorite gaming console is/was/will be. If I wanted to post stuff on how to accessibly play a video game, I'd post it on the accessible games board. I don't want to talk about playing them accessibly though too much, I want to talk about the games and the consoles themselves. Hense the reason why these kinds of topics will not belong on the accessible games board.

Post 16 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 15-Jan-2017 17:04:33

Understood.
But, don't gamers give each other tips?
If you were to help some get started, wouldn't you have a greater number of players to discuss the games with?
Suppose your board started out with ideas on how to play. That might make more interested and then you've got partners in crime.

Post 17 by Shepherdwolf (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 15-Jan-2017 18:53:26

As one of those aforementioned blind gamers who's dabbled in mainstream stuff from time to time, I'll say that posting game talk in general in Accessible Games probably wouldn't matter.
There's a thorny question about what is accessible and what isn't. But frankly, I doubt the community leaders would get annoyed if we were talking about pokemon or zelda or mortal kombat in accessible games, even though the games technically aren't accessible in the screenreader/blind-tailored sense. Many games are at least nominally playable, and yeah, there are quite a few on the boards I know who play at least some video games, or have tried at least.

So personally, I say have on. Go make your posts in Accessible Games and see what comes of it.

As far as location: can't you change/tweak that? I've never bothered, but I could've sworn you could change the location shown in your profile, so I'm not really sure what the point of that first idea was.

Post 18 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 0:18:58

you can change or not show a location, but it makes you show a country.

Post 19 by Westcoastcdngrl (move over school!) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 6:00:57

It may make you show a country but that doesn't mean that you have to put in the country
in which you live.

I've got my country listed as Niue (pronounced new way) but I most certainly do not live
there... I just listed it because I didn't want to state where I am at the moment (I'm a
Canadian but I also do not live in Canada at the moment)... I also like that that Niue sounds
like "no way" as in "there's no way I'm telling you where I am."

Post 20 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 12:22:33

Tabby, I have to ask. How in the world do you play skyrim of all games as a completely blind person? I've got enough perriferal vision to play games reasonably comfortably (and I do, often) but Skyrim is so open and vast that I can't imagine how anyone with no sight could get any enjoyment out of it. Honestly curious.

Post 21 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 12:49:18

You can't ask that Remy. They only want to talk to people that know.
Laughing.

Post 22 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 13:33:47

I get sited help with Skyrim. I enjoy it, although I'm sure I could enjoy it more.

Post 23 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 15:14:45

Tabby - and anyone else - it might be worth your time to run a google search on a game called A Hero's call. They've got a kickstarter page (more than fully funded by the way). They are a couple of people who used to play mainstream games, but can't now due to sight. They're putting together a pretty decent sounding RPG. When I say decent-sounding, I mean voice acting, some pretty good sound effects and music. They've got a trailer and demo video up on their kickstarter page. Check it out. I know accessible games are pretty lackluster in the story department most of the time. They're trying to help that.

Post 24 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 15:19:52

sounds pretty cool.
have you ever heard of Skies of Arcadia? it's an RPG, and it's really awesome.

Post 25 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 19:09:16

Yes Tabby I have indeed. I've heard great things about it as well. I have not played that particular one due to its lack of voice acting. I generally don't play games without voice acting. I can read print, but very slowly. Ironic though because my absolutely favorite RBG story of all time is Xenogears, which is probably the most non-voice acted text-heavy game I've ever seen. I used to play games without voiced dialog back in my younger days when it wasn't really around, but these days I get impatient, just because I do read so slow.

Post 26 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 16-Jan-2017 20:10:56

Skies of Arcadia has a bit of voice acting, but not much, it's more to make it interesting, it doesn't give much information, just things like "yay" and "I will kill you! All of you!" and "Die!" and.... "aye aye" etc etc. anyway there's another pretty good game, called Fable, (maybe you've heard of it), it's basically all voice acting. especially fable 2 and 3.

Post 27 by the oracle (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2017 8:57:23

at wayne, you do raise a fair point

however, in my defence, I had no idea this site was geared towards the blind until people started telling me.

also their is no place on the home page that suggests it is, meaning anyone can join if they want to

so if anyone can join, surely anyone is allowed to make a suggestion for something they might benifit from?

I think the comment, if you want to talk about games their are other places, it's a bit rude and a little close minded

I could easily post here and tell all the people that talk about technology that their are other places to do it, but I don't.

I don't because talking about technology is what they want to do and it benifits them

if I want to talk about final fantasy, I can talk about final fantasy

Post 28 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2017 12:56:13

Agreed, you can talk about anything on the earth you wish.
This site welcomes anyone, and any conversation.
The thing is, it is geared to the blind, and I was suggesting that the blind are going to want to know how to make these games accessible first.
If you don't wish to talk about accessibility of a game, you have many places to just talk straight video games, or you can not post an answer to a question that ask about how to make video games accessible.
What you should not do, but you can anyway, is refuse to discuss accessibility on a site geared to the blind if you are talking video, visual games.
That was my narrow minded point, not that the discussion of video games was not a good one to talk about.
Now, what would you like to discuss Oracle?
Smile.

Post 29 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2017 12:57:49

Oh, and I should say.
The poster of this board is smart.
She has figured out how to just discuss video games on a board that isn't in the accessible games board.
I'm not sure why the accessible part mattered, but...
